More Evacuations in Memphis; City Waits on River

Sunday, 08 May 2011 11:33 AM EDT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — More people in Memphis are being told they should evacuate their homes as the Mississippi River continues to rise.

Officials said Sunday they were going door-to-door to tell about 240 people to get out of their homes before the river reaches its peak. In all, officials have gone to more than 1,300 homes to tell residents to head to higher ground.

About 370 people are already staying in shelters.

The river is expected to crest Tuesday at 48 feet.

The mighty Mississippi has spared Kentucky and northwest Tennessee any catastrophic flooding, but some low-lying towns and farmland have been inundated with water.
