Sen. Booker Chats With Jimmy Fallon on Senate Rules, 'Bring It' Challenge

("The Tonight Show"/YouTube)

By    |   Tuesday, 11 September 2018 11:52 AM EDT

Proud of his decision "to be a law unto [himself] and willingly flout the rules of the Senate," Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., celebrated his "bring it" challenge he had given to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings last week.

"Finally, I just announced that I was not going to abide by this committee confidential process – I was going to release these documents," Sen. Booker told "The Tonight Show" starring Jimmy Fallon. "At which point, the more elder senior senator from Texas basically accused me of conduct unbecoming a senator and threatened to expel me from the Senate."

Fallon then prompted him on what he said next.

"I said, 'bring it,'" Booker replied to raucous applause and musical accompaniment.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, challenged Booker's skirting the senate rules and suggested he lose his seat on the Judiciary Committee or in the Senate.

"No senator deserves to sit on this committee or serve in the Senate, in my view, if they decide to be a law unto themselves and willingly flout the rules of the Senate," Sen. Cornyn said Thursday, Sept. 6.

Booker replied to Cornyn: "Then apply the rule, bring the charges."

Critics of Booker's maneuver say he was not merely attempting to expose committee confidential documents, but also raise his political cachet for a potential 2020 campaign against President Donald Trump.
