The Secret Service is shopping for a Harley-Davidson -- even though President Donald Trump has supported a boycott if the company moves some production overseas, Roll Call reported.
The agency posted its intention to buy a Harley motorcycle earlier this week, specifying: “brand name only, with police equipment accessories.”
Tension between Trump and the Wisconsin-based bike manufacturer erupted over the summer when the president slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to bolster domestic manufacturing. The European Union responded by pledging to raise tariffs on some goods imported from the United States, including Harleys.
Harley, arguing it could lose as much as $100 million a year, pledged to shift some production abroad to avoid added tariffs on bikes sold in the EU, prompting Trump to tweet the possibility of a boycott.
Many federal law enforcement agencies use Harley-Davidsons, Roll Call noted – and the Secret Service contends that choosing another make and model would cost thousands. The latest bid is for a bike that’ll replace one with “excessive mileage” and that’s “beyond its regular replacement cycle,” Roll Call reported.
