Former senator Rick Santorum said he put together his latest book “American Patriots: Answering the Call to Freedom” as a “little reminder” of what the Founding Fathers were fighting for and why it resonates today, 236 years later.
Santorum’s book gives the accounts of 25 heroes of the Revolutionary War and the sacrifices they made to secure freedom for themselves and future generations.
“The general outline of the book is actually the Declaration of Independence and these stories are stories that fill in why people were fighting and what they were fighting and what they were doing,” he told Newsmax.TV. “And so I tried to put in the context of really what we’re fighting for today and tried to inspire some unsung patriots of today’s battles to maintain freedom. These are the folks who won freedom and in some cases ordered the freedom by drafting and helping with the Constitution.
“But every generation since has to maintain it. And of course the farther you get away from those founders' vision the more you tend to forget what was at stake, what we were fighting for, why we were fighting. So this is a little reminder of not just who was fighting but what they were fighting for and really the same issues are at stake today in this election as were back in 1776.”

The book highlights ordinary citizens such as the “Virginia Giant, Peter Francisco, an unusually tall and big man for his time that fought in nearly every major engagement of the Revolutionary War and Nancy Morgan Hart who spied on the British for the rebels.
“So there are very colorful characters, ordinary people, ordinary citizens who went out and did extraordinary things to win our freedom,” he said.
Santorum also noted that the revolution that closely followed America’s, the French Revolution, also has parallel sand lessons for today.
“The French Revolution was anti-clerical, anti-God, secular, atheistic revolution,” he said. “Rights didn’t come from God. Yes they were for liberty, they were for equality but the government was the one who was going to order liberty not the individual. Government was going to order liberty; government was going to guarantee equality of result.
“That’s where you get into this model of the government giving you rights, government telling you how to exercise those rights so government can arrange things. This is the Obama model so when you hear him say European socialism think French Revolution, think American Revolution. That was the debate at the time of our founders. It is the current debate today.”
