Sen. Marco Rubio’s plane made an emergency landing in Albuquerque, N.M. Saturday en route from one Romney-focused rally in Las Vegas, Nevada to another in Iowa.
A sensor in the private plane went off indicating potential electrical problems, Albuquerque International Sunport spokesman Daniel Jiron told the
Albuquerque Journal.
Less than an hour before the event was set to start at the Des Moines Capitol Building at 6 p.m. the first-term senator from Florida, who is in the running to be the Republicans' vice-presidential candidate, tweeted, “May be a bit late to rally in #DesMoines #Iowa for @MittRomney. Plane forced to make emergency landing in Albuquerque.”
Unfortunately for the waiting crowd of roughly 100 that included Iowa's Republican Gov. Terry Branstad, Rubio was unable to get a replacement plane, and noted that the downed plane was the second one to malfunction that day.
“Not one, but two planes I was on today had malfunctions. Second one forced to make emergency landing in New Mexico. I know how to take a hint!,” he tweeted. “Was looking forward 2 it. We will be back.”
He did not elaborate on what went wrong with his first plane.
He later tweeted: "Was able to give speech by cell phone to crowd at the @MittRomney rally in#DesMoines #Iowa.Looking forward to seeing u guys soon in person!"
At the earlier event in Las Vegas, Rubio condemned President Obama’s policies and urged support for Romney, saying, “November is not the time to go backward to the dark days of history.”
