Poll: Romney Throttles Obama In Rural America

By    |   Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:00 PM EDT

Gov. Mitt Romney has a massive lead in rural areas across the country, leading President Barack Obama 59 to 37, according to Politico and NPR.

Greenberg Quinlan Rosberg Research and North Star Opinion Research, one Democratic and one Republican, collaborated on the poll, which found Romney’s lead has expanded by eight points from last month, when the polled showed he only had a 54 to 40 lead.

“These really are Republican base voters ... coming home. They're 85 percent white, 50 percent conservative, and two-thirds of them attend church at least a couple of times a month," said Dan Judy, of North Star. "The debate went a long way to making rural voters more comfortable with him in the way they were comfortable with George Bush."

The margin, Politico reported, is much larger even than the 53 to 45 gap that John McCain won over rural voters by in 2008.

Obama has had a difficult time connecting with rural voters who have been hard hit by the recession.
