The renowned super-cop who stars in the hit reality show "I Am Homicide" has thrown his hat in the ring to run for sheriff of Mecklenburg County in North Carolina.
Garry McFadden – who's investigated more than 800 homicides and solved 90 percent of them – said in a video posted on Twitter:
"After much prayer and thought, I've decided to humbly offer myself for service as your next Mecklenburg County Sheriff … I do not take this opportunity lightly and I know I can do it but not without you and your support."
McFadden, a retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police homicide detective, will face incumbent Sheriff Irwin Carmichael in a May 8 runoff.
He's gained national notoriety as the star of "I Am Homicide," on the cable network Investigation Discovery, on which he uses his street smarts to solve crimes.
McFadden said he sees the sheriff's position as an extension of the community work he now does, including mentoring high school kids.
