Christmas is the top holiday for most Americans, edging out Independence Day, according to a new survey released Friday.
Fifty-nine percent of adults
told Rasmussen Reports that Christmas was one of the nation's most important holidays.
Only 6 percent said that Christmas was the least important holiday, while 33 percent said it was between the two categories.
In a July survey, 58 percent of Americans
told Rasmussen that the Fourth was their most important holiday.
In other findings:
- Ninety-three percent said they will celebrate Christmas with their families, up from 87 percent last year.
- Fifty-six percent will attend a religious service this year, up from 50 percent last year.
- Thirty-five percent will not attend a service, while 9 percent were undecided.
- Seventy-one percent said they still believed the central Christian tenet that Jesus Christ is the son of God sent to Earth to die for their sins.
- Only 18 percent said they do not believe that tenant, while 11 were not sure. The results have been consistent with Rasmussen's polling since 2006.
The Rasmussen poll of 1,000 Americans was taken on Tuesday and Wednesday. It has a margin of error of 3 percent.
