The majority of U.S. adults with school-age children oppose a federal policy that allows transgender children to choose which bathroom they use in public schools, according to the results of a new poll.

The Rasmussen survey finds that 55 percent of Americans with children in school do not agree with the Obama administration's recent order that says transgender students can use the restroom they identity with in public school buildings. Thirty-two percent are in favor of the practice.

Other key findings from the poll:
  • Overall, 51 percent of American adults are against transgender students' use of bathrooms for the opposite gender, while 33 percent support it.
  • 24 percent of those surveyed think the federal government should be able to set bathroom policies in elementary and secondary public schools.
  • 25 percent of married adults support the Obama administration's bathroom directive, as opposed to 34 percent of unmarried adults.
  • 50 percent of Democrats agree that transgender students should be able to choose which bathroom they use, compared to 13 percent of Republicans
