Most U.S. voters believe marijuana should be made legal, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.
The results:
- 60 percent of voters say marijuana use should be made legal, while 34 percent disagree.
- 94 percent of voters approve "allowing adults to legally use marijuana for medical purposes if their doctor prescribes it," while 5 percent disapprove.
- 76 percent of voters approve of changing marijuana's classification from Schedule 1, the same class as heroin, while 18 percent disapprove.
"From a stigmatized, dangerous drug bought in the shadows to an accepted treatment for various ills, to a widely accepted recreational outlet, marijuana has made it to the mainstream," said Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director.
The poll was conducted among 1,062 voters from April 12 to April 18, with a margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
