Javier Jiménez, the mayor of San Sebastian in Puerto Rico, on Tuesday disputed Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló's claim he supports him despite calls for Rosselló to step down.
"It's not true that I support the governor," Jimenez told Fox News late Monday. "What he said isn't true."
Rosselló told Fox News host Shepard Smith on Monday that Jimenez was one of his supporters.
"There are folks that have supported me, there are folks that support the rule of law," Rosselló told Smith when asked who backed him.
Specifically, when pressed, Rosselló said "a lot of people from the administration. . . . The mayor of San Sebastian, for example, supported this effort . . . Javier Jimenez, for example.”
Thousands of Puerto Ricans took to the streets Monday to launch an island-wide strike and demand their governor's resignation in part over leaked profanity-laced, homophobic, and misogynistic text messages between Rosselló and his staff.
Rosselló on Sunday said he would not seek re-election but would not step down because he has a lot of work to do for Puerto Rico.
Jiménez also told the news outlet he was waiting for results of an investigation of the text messages.
Jiménez also issued a statement on the San Sebastian Facebook page: "I have been clear and consistent in establishing that our Constitution provides mechanisms to interrupt the tenure by which a governor was elected by popular vote.
"The Puerto Rico House of Representatives has already begun the evaluation related to the 'chat' in which the governor participated, assembling a committee of lawyers from different political ideologies who will evaluate whether there are serious or less serious offenses that lead to moral corruption, so that an impeachment process could be initiated. I have established that we should expect this committee to issue an assessment on the 'chat.'"
