Priebus Slams Obama on Abortion

By    |   Thursday, 23 August 2012 02:48 PM EDT

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus lambasted President Barack Obama for his views on abortion Wednesday, as the GOP seeks to fend off Democratic attacks on the issue.

“The new obsession [of Democrats] is the platform of the Republican Party on abortion,” Priebus told Greta Van Susteren on Fox News. “What about the obsession of a guy who believes in partial-birth abortion? I mean, what about that obsession? Why aren’t we talking about that minority view of abortion in our country that this president holds dear to his heart?”

During the 2008 campaign Obama told Fox News that he was in favor of state bans on late-term abortions, as long as they offered exceptions for the mother’s health, Politico reports. In 2003, Obama suggested he was “pro-choice” on all abortions.

Abortion exploded onto the front pages Sunday, when Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who is running for Senate, said women’s bodies often shut down to prevent pregnancy in cases of “legitimate rape.” He later apologized.

After the RNC’s draft platform included a provision against abortion that didn’t make an exception for rape, the Democrats rushed to call it the “Akin Plank.”

But now Republicans are shining the light on Obama’s abortion views. Talk radio king Rush Limbaugh ripped the president Wednesday for supporting late-term abortion. And National Review editor Rich Lowry offered a similar view in an opinion piece on Politico Thursday.
