Supreme Court Brief: Majority of Calif. Pregnancies Unintended

Supreme Court Brief: Majority of Calif. Pregnancies Unintended

By    |   Monday, 13 November 2017 11:09 PM EST

More than half of California's 700,000 pregnancies every year are unintended, it was revealed Monday.

The fact was included in a Supreme Court brief regarding an upcoming case the court will hear, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Xavier Becerra. The case involves a California law that requires "crisis pregnancy centers," nonprofits that try to convince women not to have abortions, to post notices that say free- and low-cost abortions are available in the state.

"Some 700,000 California women become pregnant each year, and over half of these pregnancies are unintended," a Supreme Court brief on the case reads.

The nonprofit groups have sued because of the mandate, saying it violates their First Amendment rights. They also argued the law unfairly targets them because facilities that provide abortions are not required to post information that could steer women away from undergoing the procedure.

According to PJ Media, facilities that offer ultrasounds, general prenatal care, counseling regarding contraception options, and pregnancy testing in California are required to post the following:

"California has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services (including all FDA-approved methods of contraception), prenatal care, and abortion for eligible women. To determine whether you qualify, contact the county social services office at [insert the telephone number]."
