Most Americans do not agree with President Donald Trump's proposal to allow teachers to carry guns, according to the latest NBC News/Survey Monkey poll released Thursday.
During a listening session held at the White House last month, with survivors and parents of victims of the Parkland, Florida school shooting where 17 people were killed, Trump called for trained teachers that could "immediately fire back" at attackers.
According to the survey:
- 56 percent disagree with the president's proposal, compared to 44 percent who strongly disagree, and 12 percent somewhat disagree.
- 42 percent agree with Trump's proposal, while 25 percent strongly agree, and 17 percent somewhat agree.
- 80 percent of Republicans agree with arming teachers; 50 percent strongly agree, while 30 percent somewhat agree.
- 19 percent of Republicans disagree with arming teachers, compared to 11 percent who strongly disagree, and 8 percent who somewhat disagree.
- 88 percent of Democrats disagree with the proposal, compared to 75 percent who strongly disagree, and 13 percent who somewhat disagree.
- 11 percent of Democrats agree with Trump's proposal, 5 percent strongly agree and 6 percent somewhat agree.
- 64 percent of independents disagree, while 46 percent strongly disagree, and 18 percent somewhat disagree.
- 35 percent of independent agree with arming teachers, compared to 20 percent who strongly agree and 15 percent who somewhat agree.
The poll was conducted from Feb. 26 to Feb. 28, 2018 among 2,857 adults, with an error estimate of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
