Former President Barack Obama left Americans more politically divided than ever before, and the trend is continuing under President Donald Trump, according to a new survey.
The biggest difference between liberals and conservatives remains race, the poll by the Pew Research Center found.
The gap in "opinions between Republicans and Democrats about racial discrimination and black advancement has increased to 50 points," the survey said.
Most liberals claim blacks cannot get ahead because of racism, while most conservatives believe blacks are "mostly responsible for their own" conditions, the study found.
"The divisions between Republicans and Democrats on fundamental political values — on government, race, immigration, national security, environmental protection and other areas — reached record levels during Barack Obama's presidency. In Donald Trump's first year as president, these gaps have grown even larger," the survey said.
"Republicans and Democrats are now further apart ideologically than at any point in more than two decades," it added.
Pew based its conclusion on 10 questions posed to 5,000 adults. It has conducted the same survey annually since 1994.
