Americans continue to express a lack of confidence in their nation's government.
A
Gallup poll released Wednesday shows that 21 percent of those surveyed put the government at the top of their list of concerns, with the economy following at 18 percent, and unemployment, healthcare, and jobs tying at 16 percent.
"The issues that concern Americans at the start of 2014, and as [President Barack] Obama prepares to deliver the second State of the Union address of his second term, are similar to those Gallup measured in December, and not wildly different from those last January," Gallup said.
The survey also found that government is the leading concern across party lines, "although Republicans and independents are more likely than Democrats to cite it."
"Mentions of healthcare as a problem are much higher for Republicans than for independents," it said.
Gallup conducted telephone interviews Jan. 5-8 with a random sample of 1,018 adults living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
