Sachs/Mason Dixon Poll: 65% Back Balanced Budget Amendment

Almost two-thirds of Americans support a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget, according to a new Sachs/Mason-Dixon poll. The survey found that 65 percent support such a move, while 27 oppose it and 8 percent are unsure, according to The Daily Caller, which says it obtained the results exclusively.

Support between Democrats and Republicans was split 45 and 81 percent, respectively, while opposition between the parties was 44 and 11 percent. A 64 percent majority of Republican respondents said they would be more apt to vote for a pro-amendment presidential candidate, versus 21 percent of Democrats.

The findings could spur some consensus in Washington over the debt ceiling question, which has an Aug. 2 deadline.

“Americans are concerned about our nation’s deepening deficit and as a result, an overwhelming number support a balanced budget amendment,” according to a news release from Ron Sachs Communications, which ordered the poll. The release also points out that almost every state has an amendment requiring a balanced budget.
