Ross Perot Endorses Romney

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:55 AM EDT

Third-party presidential candidate and billionaire businessman Ross Perot has given his nod to GOP standard bearer Mitt Romney for president.

Perot ran for the White House in 1992 and 1996 on a platform that included liberal and conservative issues with a focus on balancing the budget and cutting the deficit.

“At stake is nothing less than our position in the world, our standard of living at home, and our constitutional freedoms,” Perot wrote in a statement according to The Washington Post. “Mitt has the background, experience, intelligence, and integrity to turn things around.”

The 82-year-old made his fortune in computer systems and his wealth is estimated to be about $3.5 billion. During his first run for the presidency in 1992, he dropped out for months before reentering the race and taking some 19 percent of the vote.

Just two weeks ago Perot told C-SPAN that he would not endorse either Romney or President Baraack Obama as Democrats and Republicans are not taking the deficit seriously. ”Nobody that’s running really talks about it, about what we have to do and why we have to do it,” he said. “They would prefer not to have it discussed.”
