Occupy D.C. Fracas: Park Police Officer Injured in Fight With Disorderly Man

Friday, 23 December 2011 10:18 AM EST

A U.S. Park Police officer was hospitalized after a fight with a man at an Occupy D.C. camp. The incident stemmed from a call involving a mid-day report of a drunken man assaulting a woman, The Washington Post reported.

The incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. Thursday at the camp in McPherson Square park, a block from the White House. When police arrived they found several “extremely intoxicated individuals,” Park Police spokesman Sgt. Dave Schlosser told the Post.

Police arrested one man for disorderly conduct and then attempted to arrest another who resisted and began fighting with police. A reporter for the Post, which is located just a block from the encampment, witnessed eight officers try to subdue the man. The struggle went on for more than 10 minutes while a lunch-time crowd of passers-by watched.

A stun-gun was eventually used on the suspect who nonetheless managed to kick out the back window of a squad car. The man also allegedly kicked an officer in the groin; the injury required hospitalization. The man was charged with assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct and destruction of government property, the Post reported.
