Rep. Gohmert: Obama 'Lies' About GOP's Healthcare Plan

By    |   Monday, 12 August 2013 04:17 PM EDT

President Barack Obama is lying when he says Republicans want to deny 30 million people healthcare by plotting to kill the Affordable Care Act, Congressman Louis Gohmert of Texas says.

"President Obama knows that's a lie. He knows that Republicans are not trying to deprive anyone of healthcare and, in fact, it is exactly the opposite," Gohmert told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[Obamacare is] going to deny the level of care that people have been getting … a panel [is] going to decide, literally, well, gee, you're just a little bit older than we would like so you don't get a new hip; you're going to have to live in pain the rest of your life. Or, you don't get a pacemaker."

Story continues below.

The president made his claim about the alleged Republican motives during a press conference on Friday.

"The one unifying principle in the Republican Party at the moment is making sure that 30 million people don’t have healthcare," he said.

But Gohmert said its GOP lawmakers, now discussing plans to defund parts of the healthcare law, who actually are striving to bring superior health coverage to the nation.

"I am sick of people saying we have no alternative [to Obamacare]. It is not true … and anybody that says that has got their head buried in the sand," he said.

Gohmert said, for example, under a bill he has proposed, seniors would have more economical choices in obtaining healthcare.

"We'll give you $5,000 cash in a health savings account to cover your deductible and buy you this fantastic Cadillac coverage to cover everything above that. That's an alternative," he said.

"It would, in the long run, be a whole lot cheaper. So there are all kinds of alternatives and I just get sick of all of the lies. Really, if we're going to have a good discussion, people have got to quit lying so blatantly."

Gohmert, who represents the Lone Star State’s First Congressional District, said GOP leaders who fear they would be blamed for a government shutdown as the result of an Obamacare defunding fight have to rethink their position.

"It would not be the Republicans. And Republican mainstreamers, Republican establishment folks need to get that through their head. We want to save America," he said.

"The president is really going to just squash the poor little individual guy that's just struggling to get by. And if you make as little as $14,000, that's 133 percent of the poverty level, then you're going to pay extra income tax if you don't buy the level of healthcare the government's mandating."

Gohmert repeated the call of many GOP lawmakers who have said that the only way Obamacare can be halted now is for a national grassroots uprising.

"If people will let their members of Congress and even their senators know . . . there's going to be problems unless they step up and help us stop this terrible thing that's going to hurt so many Americans called Obamacare," he said.

"If people will let their members know that, then you're going to have enough members stand up and do the right thing. That's the great thing about America. But you have to make your voice heard in order for that to happen."
