Gallup: Romney-Obama Race Too Close to Call

By    |   Tuesday, 09 October 2012 04:08 PM EDT

Although President Barack Obama maintains a 3-point lead among registered voters, Governor Mitt Romney has the edge among voters who say they will show up on election day, according to Gallup’s October 9 daily polling report.

Obama’s 49 to 46 lead among registered voters is identical to what it was in the week before the October 3 debate, leading Gallup’s analysts to suggest that if the election were held today, it might be too close to call.

The Gallup poll reports each day are 7-day averages, based on daily polls of 2,500 to 3,500 registered and likely voters. This allows the company to track the longer term feeling of voters, as well as reactions to anything that has happened in the preceding 24 hours.

The polling service’s first week of likely voter surveys show an advantage for Romney, which is standard at this point in the election cycle for Republican candidates for President, the report said.

Although Romney received a significant bounce in poll results after his dominating performance in the debate, Gallup reported that the rise in his numbers may be leveling off as the last two days have seen Obama’s numbers begin to rebound by a point or two.
