Fox News military commentator Lt. Col. Ralph Peters gave President Barack Obama good marks for his Libyan response in one breath while proclaiming him “the worst president since James Buchanan” in the other on Tuesday.
“By dumb luck, planning, or whatever, he got Libya just about right,” Peters told host Bill O’Reilly on ‘The O’Reilly Factor.’ “This is about as good as war gets. It’s not a video game.”
Peters and O’Reilly disagreed on two key points concerning Libya and its outgoing 42-year dictator Moammar Gadhafi. While O’Reilly said he believes a United Nations troop presence is necessary to smooth the transition of power and help keep the peace, Peters stressed the importance of keeping Western boots off of Libyan soil for image reasons.
O’Reilly, who would like to see Gadhafi tried before an international court, asked Peters what he would like to see happen to the former leader after his ouster is complete.
“If the world is lucky, he’ll be killed . . . and save the world the circus of a trial,” Peters said. “Otherwise, Europeans are whining, ‘No death penalty for Gadhafi, the death penalty is wrong.’”
