President Barack Obama's political outreach group, Organizing for Action, is planning a major gun control campaign later this month as the Senate prepares to debate Democratic-sponsored gun legislation.
According to
the Huffington Post, the group plans to join with Mayors Against Illegal Guns to host community events across the country on April 13 aimed at pressuring lawmakers to enact gun law reforms.
The themes of the events, like “Demand Action” and “We Have Not Forgotten," are designed to raise awareness that stiff opposition continues on Capitol Hill despite recent polls showing that a vast majority of Americans favor tougher gun measures.
The main sticking point on new gun legislation now appears to be the issue of universal background checks, which most Republicans and some conservative Democrats oppose.
Several Republicans have threatened a filibuster to prevent a vote from even taking place.
According to the Huffington Post, Organizing for Action wants to create enough grassroots pressure on lawmakers that they feel compelled to back legislation.
“These are going to be local events to call Congress to action,” one organizing official told the website.
