WSJ’s Strassel: Obama Is the Real Flip-Flopper

By    |   Friday, 26 October 2012 10:27 AM EDT

While President Barack Obama is heatedly attacking Mitt Romney for flip-flopping, calling it “Romnesia,” "Obamnesia" is the more pressing issue, says Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel.

She offers a bevy of anecdotes where Obama changed positions, several of which are listed below.

Debt Limit

"Leadership means that the buck stops here . . . I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit," Obama said as a senator in March 2006.

"It is not acceptable for us not to raise the debt ceiling and to allow the U.S. government to default," Obama said as president in July 2011.

Spending Freeze

"The problem with a spending freeze is you're using a hatchet where you need a scalpel," Obama said as senator in September 2008.

"Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years," he said as president in January 2010.

Healthcare

"I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal healthcare program," Obama said as an Illinois state senator in June 2003.

"I have not said that I was a single-payer supporter," he said as president in August 2009.

Promises

"If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition," President Obama said in 2009.

"We've got a long way to go, but . . . we've come too far to turn back now. . . . And that's why I'm running for a second term," he said earlier this month.
