President Barack Obama's disapproval rating in Iowa has risen to 54 percent, the highest level since he took office, according to a
Des Moines Register poll.
Meanwhile, his approval rating stands at only 41 percent, down from 49 percent in February and 68 percent when he took office in January 2009.
The survey of 809 Iowans was conducted June 2-5 by Selzer & Co. The margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.
"That says to me the scandals are taking a hit," J. Ann Selzer, the poll's director, told the Register.
A total of 60 percent of Iowans believe the nation is on the wrong track. They're unhappy with how the Obama administration has handled the scandals involving the Benghazi attack, IRS targeting, and the Justice Department's seizure of reporters' communications. The poll was taken before the National Security Agency revalations.
A total of 64 percent of respondents disapprove of Obama's policy on the budget deficit and 58 percent disapprove of his economic policy in general. Another 57 percent take issue with the way he is dealing with Congress.
Obama isn't doing so well nationally, either.
The last seven major polls tallied by
Real Clear Politics, conducted May 30 to June 11, produce an average approval rating of 46.7 percent for Obama, compared to a disapproval rating of 48 percent.
Gallup's three-day rolling average for June 9-11, produced through surveys of 1,500 people, shows Obama with an approval rating of 45 percent and a disapproval rating of 47 percent.
Rasmussen Reports' poll for the same period shows 51 percent disapprove of Obama, while 47 percent approve.
