Outdoor Dining Increasing NYC's Rat Problem

New York City residents, trying to stay clear of the coronavirus while they dine outside at restaurants, are now faced with another issue: rats.

NBC4 in New York reported indoor dining is on hold indefinitely in New York City restaurants. The only options are outdoor seating, taking out or delivery.

Giacomo Romano, owner of Ciccio, an Italian restaurant in SoHo, blames the sanitation of a nearby park for contributing to the rat problem at his place.

He said Father Fagan Park is attracting huge rats, according to the television station.

“There are a lot of new holes in the ground cover by the plants," Romano wrote to NBC New York. "Last night, a customer had a baby rat running on his shoe and I let you just imagine his reaction."

Romano said he agrees with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to postpone indoor dining, but something needs to be done to get rid of the rodents.

He claimed there is only one trash can for the park.

Meanwhile, Pasquale Giacobbe just reopened his barbershop after four months. His shop is on the same street as Romano’s restaurant and he agreed something needs to be done.

"I already don’t have the help from the state, no loans from nobody. At least they can come do something, for all the tax we pay," Giacobbe said.

The Daily Mail noted New York City entered phase two of its reopening plan on June 22 and allowed restaurants to open with outdoor dining.
