New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio defended his 25-year-old daughter on Monday, following her Saturday night arrest during a protest.

The mayor told reporters the media knew about Chiara de Blasio’s arrest before he did, local NYC NBC affiliate channel 4 reports.

He said he “trusts his daughter” and said she would not “commit any violence.”

Chiara de Blasio was arrested in Manhattan for unlawful assembly, according to police records. She was cited with a desk appearance ticket, which is handed out instead of a custodial arrest.

"I trust my daughter, I've known her, her whole life. She's an incredibly good human being," de Blasio told reporters. "This is not someone who would ever commit any violence ... she was very clear she believes she was following the instructions of police officers and doing what they were asking.”

The mayor said he was unaware about his daughter’s plans to participate in the protests during a press conference.

"She believes a lot of change is needed. I'm proud of her that she cares so much and she's willing to go out there and do something about it," he said. "She believes that everything she did was in the spirit of peaceful, respectful protest, and the bottom line is I will let her speak for herself in any way that she wants to."

"I admire that she was out there trying to change something that she thought was injust and doing it in a peaceful manner," he said.

The mayor then ripped the Sergeants Benevolent Association, which is the union for the New York Police Department for tweeting out an image of his daughter’s arrest information. The tweet showed her home address and ID number.

"The SBA did something unconscionable and it's not just because it's my daughter,” de Blasio said.

Twitter removed the tweet because it violated its rules. The arrest information was followed by a statement, “How can the NYPD protect the city of NY from rioting anarchist when the Mayors object throwing daughter is one of them.”
