CNN: Mueller Asked About NRA, Trump Dealings, Ex-Aide Says

A former Trump campaign aide told CNN that special counsel Robert Mueller's office inquired about the campaign's close relationship with the National Rifle Association, specifically how the president came to speak at the organization's national conference in 2015.

"When I was interviewed by the special counsel's office, I was asked about the Trump campaign and our dealings with the NRA," Sam Nunberg told the news outlet.

Nunberg, who worked for Trump and his campaign in 2015, has been questioned by Mueller's office on at least two separate occasions and last week was interviewed by Senate intelligence committee investigators who are "narrowly focused on collusion," he told NBC News.

Investigators also asked about the NRA and efforts by Maria Butina, a Russian national, to get a meeting with Trump through the powerful gun-rights group, Nunberg said. Butina last month pleaded guilty to conspiring with a Russian official to interfere in U.S. politics.

The NRA had already come under scrutiny from some lawmakers for its contributions to Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, but the CNN report is the first time there has been any indication the special counsel has been asking questions about the relationship and wanting to understand it.
