Minot, ND, Braces for More Rain as River Nears Crest

Saturday, 25 June 2011 08:14 AM EDT

MINOT, N.D. — More rain is forecast in Minot, N.D., possibly worsening a record-setting flood that already has damaged thousands of homes.

The swollen Souris River is expected to hit its peak Saturday at some 8 ½ feet beyond major flood stage and stay there for several days. Mayor Curt Zimbelman says if there's more rain, the situation could get even worse.

Officials estimate the surging river already has swamped at least 2,500 homes, and the number was expected to reach 4,500 by the time the river crests.

More than a quarter of the city's 40,000 residents have been evacuated.

Other towns in the Souris valley have been inundated as well.
