Tennis star Serena Williams praised the national anthem protest campaign initiated by former NFL player Colin Kaepernick and his ex-teammate Eric Reid, saying "every human . . . should be completely grateful" for their stand against social injustice in America.

"I think every athlete, every human, and definitely every African-American should be completely grateful and honored how Colin and Eric are doing so much more for the greater good," she said after her U.S. Open match Friday, according to the AP.

"They really use their platform in ways that are really unfathomable. I feel like they obviously have great respect from a lot of their peers, especially other athletes, people that really are looking for social change."

Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams in the latest of a long-time sibling rivalry to advance to Round 3 of the U.S. Open, also saying afterward she owes "everything" to her elder sister.
