Town leaders in Ridgefield, Conn., say they won't allow a moviemaker to shoot a film with themes linked to the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in nearby Newtown.
Director Jonathan Bucari has said he wants to make a film called “Illness” in Ridgefield, reports the
Danbury News-Times.
Bucari hasn't asked the town for permission, but local leaders have already gone on record against it, indicating the wide-spread sensitivity that still resides in residents across the state to the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown that took the lives of 20 children and seven adults.
“I will do everything in my power to prevent this,” First Selectman Rudy Marconi said Monday. “It's a bad idea. If you were to poll the residents in town, they'd be overwhelmingly against it.”
Bucari, who lives in New York, said his movie would not be directly tied to the Sandy Hook shootings, but would focus on a teenager with a mental illness and the "ever-growing fear" of his parents in the aftermath of the horrific incident in Newtown. Bucari described his effort as a nonprofit venture.
"We are not making a movie about what happened in Newtown and never will do so," he insisted in a posting on his Facebook page.
Marconi said the emotional wounds from the shootings still run deep throughout the state. "It's just wrong," he said of Bucari's plan.
