California's coronavirus outbreak started in a nail salon, Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed.
During a Thursday press conference about the state's reopening plan, Newsom told reporters that nail salons will not be allowed to serve customers again until the third phase of the process.
"This whole thing started in the state of California, the first community spread, in a nail salon," he said, according to CNBC. "I'm very worried about that."
The Golden State is transitioning from the first phase of its reopening to the second phase, which will allow businesses such as clothing stores, bookstores, and warehouses to open Friday after weeks of closures due to COVID-19.
Newsom did not offer evidence or more information about the outbreak in nail salons. The owner of one in Oakland told CNBC she was "shocked" to hear the news Thursday.
"Had they known that this was the situation, absolutely zero information was ever sent to any nail care people in the industry at all," Michelle Saunders James said. "It was very scary to hear that."
California has seen more than 62,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 2,500 deaths.
