New Jersey AG: Residents Who Break Stay Home Order Face Fines, Prison

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal on Monday said any resident who breaks Gov. Phil Murphy’s statewide stay home order could face jail time, a fine of up to $1,000 or both, per NorthJersey.com.

New Jersey had 935 new confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Monday morning, bringing the state’s total to 2,844. Twenty-seven people have died.

“The time for warnings is over,” Grewal said. “And the time to ensure compliance by using all of the tools available to us is here.”

Grewal said violaters could be charged with a disorderly persons offense, punishable by a prison term of up to six months, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.

The report comes a day after Murphy expressed anger with some New Jerseyeans ignoring a ban that closes public gatherings and nonessential businesses.

“We are really damned unhappy" about such stories, the governor said Sunday. “And we're going to take action."

Murphy said the number of people allowed to gather together had gone “to zero."

“We basically have banned any social gatherings in the state," he said. While acknowledging the difficulty of enforcement, he said, “We want no gatherings of any kind. We want people to stay home, period.”
