New Yorkers are preparing for four years of traffic headaches with Donald Trump as president.
Streets around Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan have already been a nightmare to maneuver since Trump was elected on Nov. 8, a product of protestors, supporters, media and security detail since the building houses the president-elect’s transition team.
Bhairavi Desai, director of the New York Taxi Workers' Alliance, told the Wall Street Journal on Monday that a 20-minute trip doubles when President Obama comes to town in a motorcade and turns traffic into "a tornado on top of a hurricane."
But Obama doesn’t have New York City roots like Trump does, which means regular visits would be expected.
"If President Trump has some favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, I don't think we're going to get any advance notice," former New York City traffic commissioner Sam Schwartz told the Journal. "All the roads will be frozen."
Already, the city has asked for help in providing Trump and his family security as the cost has skyrocketed. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Dec. 5., in a letter to Obama and Congress, estimated that protecting Trump up through the inauguration would be around $35 million, or roughly $500,000 per day.
"It is a high-density neighborhood and street traffic easily obstructs pathways to and from the building, making it profoundly challenging for the NYPD to establish a secure perimeter," de Blasio, a Democrat, wrote.
