New Jersey schools will remain shut for in-person instruction for the remainder of the school year, Gov. Phil Murphy announced in a tweet Monday.

The Democratic governor said the move was decided upon in order "to protect the health of our children, our educators, and their families," emphasizing "the best course of action [is to be] guided by safety and science."

Schools in New Jersey have been shut since March in response to the coronavirus crisis, with teaching instead taking place online, according to The Hill.

Most other states have also shut down schools for the remainder of their academic years due to the pandemic.

New Jersey has been particularly hard hit by coronavirus, with more than 128,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported and at least 7,910 deaths so far.
