Navy Vice Adm. Mike Gilday on Wednesday is expected to be nominated as President Donald Trump's next chief of naval operations, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Adm. Bill Moran, Trump's previous confirmed nominee for the position, unexpectedly asked to retire this week after details emerged of an inappropriate relationship with a former Navy public affairs official who left the service amid allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
Moran was vetted by the Trump administration and confirmed by the Senate in May.
He was expected to take the job in August.
Gilday, a three-star admiral, met with Trump and Navy officials Wednesday. The administration picked him over a number of four-star admirals.
