The cost of the F-35 program might not be to President-elect Donald Trump's liking, but as far as the Navy is concerned, the F-35 is far superior to that of the F-18 Super Hornet.
"If you just think about the aircraft in terms of capability . . . [the F-35] is on a completely different level from the Super Hornet," Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said at an event Tuesday, the Washington Examiner reported.
Trump last week, at his first press conference since getting elected, called for competition between Boeing's Super Hornet and the F-35, saying LMT's stealth jet was "way, way behind schedule and many billions of dollars above budget."
It was the latest in a series of criticisms Trump has lobbed toward LMT over its F-35 program.
"We need the F-35s," Richardson said Tuesday, adding, "we need that capability, and we need to get it at the very best price for the taxpayer."
LMT has vowed to get the costs down on its F-35.
