The Navy is recommending an increase to the amount of parental leave that fathers and secondary caregivers receive after a birth or adoption, the Navy personnel chief told Stars and Stripes.
The amount of non-chargeable leave would increase from 10 days maximum to 21 days, said Vice Adm. Robert Burke, chief of naval personnel and deputy chief of naval operations, said in the Stars and Stripes interview.
The recommendation is subject to the approval of the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
"The current (policy) is 10 and 10 for paternity and adoption leave, so it could be going up to somewhere around 21 and 21, is what we're guessing… that's what we're recommending. We'll see where it comes out," Burke said in the interview.
In 2016, then-Secretary of Defense Ash Carter set a 12-week maternity leave for all services, a decrease for the Navy, which had 18 weeks of maternity leave at the time, The Washington Post reported.
