Actress Debra Messing on Instagram last week praised her 13-year-old son for sitting in protest during the national anthem at a hockey game, prompting online outrage, according to Fox News.
Messing was attending a New York Rangers game with her son last Wednesday when he asked to sit during the singing of the national anthem. Her post featured a photo of him holding his hand over his heart while seated and was captioned:
"Please stand for the Star Spangled Banner.
"Son: 'Mom, I want to sit down in protest. Can we do that?'
"Me: 'Yes, honey. We can do that.'
"Who's crying? I'm not crying. #BLM"
Messing in the past has defended athletes who kneel during the anthem, a trend which began last year with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Some posters commented "disgusting" and "sickening" on Messing's Instagram feed.
