MSNBC and its parent company NBC are at odds over the cable news network's Rachel Maddow breaking the news of President Donald Trump's 2005 tax return, the New York Post reported.
"(MSNBC) announced it on Twitter, and (NBC) found out when (the general public) did," the newspaper's Page Six quoted a source.
"(MSNBC president) Phil Griffin was trying to undermine (NBC News president) Noah Oppenheim. There was never a conversation. They overplayed their hand in a huge way."
Maddow has been sharply criticized for the show.
Fox News' Sean Hannity noted: "One of the Trump-hating hosts over at NBC News, a charter member of the alt-left propaganda media dedicated to destroying Trump, got her hands on two pages of the president's 2005 tax return."
The two-pages of returns showed, in a "big anticlimax," Trump paid $38 million in taxes in 2005, Page Six said.
Maddow had tweeted about Trump's tax returns before detailing them on her show. Page Six said NBC officials were unhappy about not getting any advanced notice.
"It's their cable network, but it's still NBC News," the source told Page Six. "(NBC) did not appreciate being kept in the dark . . . To hype such a big story and not really deliver is a bit embarrassing. Airing a story you've hyped 20 minutes into your broadcast makes it a lot less of a ‘breaking news' story."
An NBC representative denied there was any tension between Griffin and Oppenheim, Page Six said.
