MSNBC Apologizes for Cinco de Mayo Drinking Skit on Show

By    |   Tuesday, 06 May 2014 04:30 PM EDT

The show might have been called Way Too Early but that apparently was no excuse for an frivolous exchange on the MSNBC show that forced the network to apologize.

The incident came during a segment to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Monday that had Morning Joe producer Louis Burgdorf dancing around in a sombrero. He was also shaking a pair of maracas and acting as if he was drinking from a bottle of tequila.

A report on Mediaite says the episode immediately lit up Twitter with people either mocking the segment or being outraged by it.

"Here’s A Cringeworthy Video Of What MSNBC Thinks Cinco De Mayo Is About," one user posted.

Hugo Balta, the president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, called the segment “abominable.”

On Tuesday the network issued an apology that read: “On Monday, Cinco De Mayo, ‘Way Too Early’ made sarcastic references to the way some Americans celebrate the holiday. It was not our intention to be disrespectful and we sincerely apologize for the ill-advised references,” the Huffington Post reports.
