MS-13 is telling members to "take out a cop" on Long Island, where the murderous gang has a stronghold, the New York Post reported Thursday.
The directive has prompted the New York Police Department to put officers on high alert, the Post reported, citing a memo it had obtained.
According to the Post, police in Hempstead, N.Y., one of the Long Island towns where the Salvadoran gang has established itself, were tipped off to the kill-directive Wednesday by a "credible" informant.
The member of the Salvadoran gang told the informant they needed to make a "statement" —and specifically wanted to kill a police officer in the Hempstead area, the Post reported.
"The police have been making too many arrests, and it's time to take the streets back and take out [shoot] a cop like we do in El Salvador," the informant quoted the suspect saying, the Post reported.
Police are on the hunt for the suspect, described in part as having a tattoo of three dots next to his eye.
"It is imperative for members of the service to take these threats seriously and adapt their work habits and lifestyles accordingly," the police memo said, the Post reported.
