For the first time in Barbie's 56-year career, Mattel Inc., the American toy manufacturing company, featured a little boy playing with a limited-edition Moschino designer doll in a newly released commercial and in turn received quite a bit of blow back.
In the commercial, the little boy is seen as proclaiming the doll as "so fierce." And while some individuals are supportive of the attempt aimed to break stereotypes, others believe that the "little boy was perpetuating 'stereotypes' of gay men,"
USA Today reports.
According to USA Today, the advertisement seeks to break gender normative stereotypes of toys that are meant for boys vs. girls.
Despite the negative attention the ad is receiving, Moschino designer Jeremy Scott said in an Instagram post that the limited-edition Moschino doll was sold out within an hour of its launch.
