House Panel Probes Dover Mortuary Over Complaints

Tuesday, 29 November 2011 02:58 PM EST

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating the operations of the Dover Air Force Base mortuary over reports of mishandled bodies there.

The committee wrote to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that it would look into allegations of “mismanagement, dishonesty and misconduct” at the facility, which handles America’s war dead, The Washington Post reported.

The announcement of the investigation, which will cover operations over the past decade, comes on the heels of charges of missing body parts and the disposal of cremated portions of remains at a landfill. The mortuary has handled the remains of more than 6,300 service members killed since the invasion of Afghanistan, the Post reported.

Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., sent the letter to Panetta.
