Authorities are warning residents who live near Lake Erie in Monroe County, Mich., to keep off the ice after rescuers spent several days searching for a snowmobile rider they think fell through.
The warning comes two days after the U.S. Coast Guard rescued five fishermen stranded on floating ice in Lake Erie.
“This video was taken on 1/14/18 at 10:30am in stony pointe in the area that the atv rider went missing,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page. “As you can see the ice is thin breaking up and moving. Please do not go on Lake Erie for any reason.”
Deputies got a call late Wednesday that a person on a snowmobile had fallen through the ice, approximately 1,000 feet from shore. The Coast Guard earlier in the week issued a warning about unstable ice because of warming temperatures and previously rescued two snowmobile riders whose sleds had gone through the ice.
