Malzberg: Million Muslim March 'Big Mistake'

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 09:48 PM EDT

The planned Million Muslim March on Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11 — the 12th  anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — is a “big mistake” that makes Muslims look bad, says Newsmax talk-show host Steve Malzberg.

“What it does is it alienates the Muslim community, it makes them look insensitive, it makes them look bad,” Malzberg said Thursday on his daily program “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“Big mistake. [They have] a lot of nerve. It’s not going to win any friends.”

The American Political Action Committee said it is staging the march to demand social justice for Muslims by the U.S. government.

In a statement, the group’s operations chief Isa Hodge says both Muslims and non-Muslims were traumatized by the Sept. 11 attacks, "but we as Muslims continue 12 years later to be victimized by being made the villains.

"Yet our government either sits idly by and does nothing to protect our freedoms . . . It is time for us as Muslims in America to stop being defensive and start being proactive by using our right to vote and our freedom of assembly.”

Malzberg said he believes the organization, which plans the March for the National Mall, is severely misguided by choosing Sept. 11 for the event.

“You think Muslims are being attacked in this country? You think Muslims don't have their civil rights in this country? You think Muslims are being villainized and victimized in this country? Then hold a march,” he said.

“Hold it any of the 365 days of the year except don't hold it on 9/11. That's not an accident. This group knows exactly what it's doing by holding this march on 9/11. They know exactly what they're doing.

Don't think they don't. It's inflammatory, it's in your face, and that's why it's being done.”

He compared the group’s selection of 9/11 to that of Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader who staged original Million Man March during the Jewish High Holy Days.

“[Farrakhan] said that the theme and the goal was introspection and making yourself better and asking for forgiveness … kind of what some of the High Holy Days spirit is all about,” Malzberg said.

“I said at that time — and, by the way, he never got near a million men — that this was being done in the time frame in order to stick it to Jews. I really felt that.”

He also compared the Million Muslim March to the proposal for a mosque near Ground Zero.

“That site was chosen for that mosque to be in your face, to rile up people, to make a point, to make a political statement," he said. "That's no accident."
