Pa. Jury: $14M for School Bus Crash, Amputation

Monday, 05 December 2011 09:17 PM EST

PHILADELPHIA — A woman who was struck by a school bus when she was in high school and lost her left leg has been awarded $14 million by a Pennsylvania jury.

The Bucks County jury awarded the damages Monday to 22-year-old Ashley Zauflik.

The Pennsbury School District admitted liability before trial. The National Transportation Safety Board had found the driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

The 2007 crash left the then-17-year-old Zauflik in a medically induced coma for a month and forced doctors to amputate her leg.

The district had offered $500,000, the cap allowed under Pennsylvania law.

Zauflik's lawyer, Thomas Kline, says he hopes to negotiate a settlement with the district or appeal the 1980 cap to the state Supreme Court.

Zauflik testified the crash left her "disfigured" and struggling with depression.
