In response to the concerns of his constituents who wrote him about recent delays and service cuts at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Rep. Mike Garcia responded in letters by touting a pair of bills that passed the House this summer, even though he did not support them, the Daily Beast reported on Wednesday.
The California Republican won a special election in May and did not have the chance to vote a few days later on the HEROES Act, which included $25 billion in emergency funding for the USPS, although all of his GOP colleagues but one opposed it.
Several weeks later, on July 1, the House voted to approve the Moving Forward Act, which appropriated another $25 billion for USPS investments in “modernizing postal infrastructure and operations, processing equipment, and other goods,” as Garcia wrote in his letter to constituents, according to the Daily Beast.
But only three Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the bill and Garcia was not one of them, with a GOP press release saying the legislation “disguises a heavy-handed and unworkable Green New Deal regime of new requirements as an ‘infrastructure bill.’”
Garcia did not mention his opposition to the bill in his letter to constituents.
A spokesperson for Garcia did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Beast about why the congressman was referencing bills he did not support or if Garcia now backed either of those bills.
