Putting Kentucky clerk Kim Davis behind bars without bail for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses is "criminalization of Christianity," GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Friday, especially considering that some of the nation's most notorious criminals, like Jeffrey Dahmer and the Boston Strangler, have been awarded bail in the past.
"Kim Davis, because she followed her convictions, is put in jail and is not given bail," Huckabee told
Fox News' "America's Newsroom" co-host Martha MacCallum. "This is an unbelievable moment in American history. And I think it may wake people up because who is next? Are pastors next? Florists? Caterers? Who else goes to jail before this is over?"

Huckabee, who plans to hold a rally in Kentucky at 3 p.m. next Tuesday in Davis' support, told the show that the Supreme Court "reached out into thin air" while redefining marriage, noting that Congress did not approve the move and President Barack Obama never signed a bill that enabled the idea.
He also defended Davis' decision to block her deputy clerks from issuing same-sex licenses, even though on Friday,
one of her deputies issued the long-sought license for James Yates and William Smith, who had previously been denied.
"It would be over her office with her name," said Huckabee. "Interestingly the very form says male and female. So the form has not been changed. Here's something I think, I hear a lot of people say it is the law of the land. I would dispute that. If we go back to read what Jefferson said, if we read what Hamilton said, if we read what Lincoln said, throughout our history, it is very clear, the court is not law unto itself. It can review law."
Also on the program, Huckabee said his campaign numbers "look pretty darn good" and are far ahead of where he was in his last presidential campaign, staged eight years ago.
"Typically, if you're hot when it is hot, you will be cold when it is cold," said Huckabee.
"Summer blockbusters never win Oscars."
