A Facebook post questioning whether parents should have a role in what is being taught in public schools has been deleted by the Michigan Democratic Party, The Detroit News reported.

The post on the Michigan Democrats' Facebook page had been blasted by conservative and school-choice groups.

The post, which appeared to be screenshot, said parents who want more say in what their children are learning “have the option to choose to send their kids to a hand-selected private school at their own expense if this is what they desire.”

It added: “The purpose of a public education in a public school is not to teach kids only what parents want them to be taught. It is to teach them what society needs them to know. The client of the public school is not the parent, but the entire community, the public.”

The Facebook post had been shared about 2,500 times before it was removed. And the Washington Examiner said a screenshot of the post went viral.

On Monday, the party appeared to try to distance itself from it.

"Parents need to have a say in their children’s education, end of story," the Democratic Party said. "The post does not reflect the views of Michigan Democrats and should not be misinterpreted as a statement of support from our elected officials or candidates."

The Michigan Republican Party jumped at the chance to blast the Democrats.

“You heard it here first, folks! @MichiganDems are ready to indoctrinate your children with what ‘society needs them to know,' ” it tweeted.

“Does anyone want to tell them #SchoolChioice was a major issue that led to Republican @GlennYoungkin’s victory in VA Vote out the Democrats!”

And Republican Governors Association spokesman Chris Gustafson told Fox News the Democrat Michigan governor must condemn the state party..

"Gretchen Whitmer must condemn the Michigan Democrat Party or admit that she believes teachers unions should control public education, not parents," Gustafson said.”
